With more than 700 years of municipal rights, the town of Hachenburg not only looks back on a long, exciting history – today Hachenburg is also often referred to as the “Pearl of the Westerwald”. The city center has survived the events of the last 400 years almost unscathed and still presents itself in its beautiful medieval garb. Even from a distance, the castle of Hachenburg is well visible in the center of the town of Hachenburg on the “Hackenberg” – today the castle is the technical college of the Bundesbank, making Hachenburg the smallest university location in Germany.

Hachenburg has also made a name for itself far beyond the region with the cultural work of Kulturzeit Hachenburg. Time and again, Hachenburg hosts festivals, concerts, cabarets and lectures that can easily compete with those in big cities.

In addition to a walk through the historic old town and the Old Market with the Lion Fountain, it is worthwhile to continue through the Castle Garden to the Westerwald Landscape Museum. In this museum of local history you will get a nice insight into the life in the Westerwald. Regular special exhibitions round off the program. The Tourist Information Hachenburger Westerwald is located on the Old Market in Hachenburg and is only 5 minutes walk from our vacation apartment in Hachenburg. A visit is definitely worthwhile; a wealth of information is available – furthermore, hiking maps and cycling maps are also available at the Hachenburg Tourist Information Center. In the historic town hall in Perlengasse you can get a small insight into Hachenburg’s underworld – apart from a permanent exhibition of the Hachenburg town archive on the town’s history, you can see an original vaulted cellar similar to many cellars in the historic town center.

The Hachenburg public library is located in the historic Vogtshof across from the town hall, town archives and Hachenburg Culture Time.
